What is the Reggio Emilia Approach®? How are Reggio Emilia schools related to the city of Reggio Emilia in Italy? What may be gained in an American context from this successful Italian pedagogical approach?
Tiziana Filippini, Pedagogist, will guide us to discover the foundation of this educational philosophy and illuminate the incredible journey of an experience born in Italy, which has now contacts and dialogues with more than 144 countries in the world.
In Reggio Emilia, Italy, just after World War II, founder and enlightened educator, Loris Malaguzzi, started the development of a pedagogical approach now known as the Reggio Emilia Approach. At his death in 1994, Reggio Children was founded to respond to the many requests for exchange and professional development from around the world and to promote, defend, and uphold children’s rights. Today, this progressive approach has earned worldwide recognition and is known for its excellence.
Tiziana Filippini is a pedagogista and collaborator of Reggio Children®. She worked as Pedagogista from 1978 to 2015 in the Municipal infant-toddler centers and preschools of Reggio Emilia. In particular, she worked at the famous Diana Preschool, which was featured by Newsweek in 1991 as, “the most advanced school in the world for early childhood education.” Mrs. Filippini was formerly the Coordinator of the Documentation and Research Center at the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre; she has traveled the world to lead conferences and seminars about the Reggio Emilia Approach, and to sustain the teacher development in schools inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach.
