Job Description

The Boston University Children’s Center is located in a newly renovated beautiful historic home in the Cottage Farm neighborhood of Brookline.  The Center is open year-round and serves children as young as infants through Pre-Kindergarten in a homelike setting, with an expansive outdoor space for the children to explore.  Please click here to learn more about our program and click here to see images of our Center and the classroom spaces.          

Center Philosophy 

The Children’s Center’s philosophy is based on blending a variety of early childhood educational philosophies and approaches, including Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Constructivist. Children at the Center are viewed as active participants in their own learning, making choices and seeking out experiences that further their development. Educators at the Center strive to create a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that supports children as they learn and grow at their own pace through play-based and child-centered experiences.  Educators at the Center believe in viewing each child as an individual, and they understand the importance of getting to know each child and meeting them where they are developmentally.

Children’s Center Staff are COVID tested twice weekly at no cost at the on campus testing centers and have access to extensive COVID related support through BU’s Healthway Team https://www.bu.edu/healthway/

Position Summary 

The primary responsibility of the Mentor Teacher is to support teachers in creating responsive classroom environments, inquiry-based emergent curriculum, and overall classroom management systems that align with the program mission and philosophy. Mentor Teachers observe in classrooms to provide constructive feedback in the moment and in team meetings. Information from classroom observations will be used by the Mentor Teacher to identify areas of growth and professional development topics to be explored in team meetings or staff meetings.

The Mentor Teacher must act as a role model for appropriate practice and step into classrooms to provide coverage when needed. Mentor Teachers develop and maintain relationships with children and families across the program. In addition, the Mentor Teacher assists the Administration in supervising, hiring, interviewing, and orientation of Assistant Teachers. The Mentor Teacher facilitates professional development for Assistant Teachers, with support of the Lead Teachers and the Assistant Directors. They must abide by all Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) licensing standards, and all policies and procedures set forth in the staff handbook.

Essential Functions & Duties

Program

  • Articulate and apply the Center’s vision and philosophy
  • Build on the Center’s child centered approach by using the latest research to enhance curriculum
  • Collaborate and assist the Administrative Team in creating short-and long-term strategic vision for the Center’s curriculum and programming
  • Demonstrate knowledge of program policies and procedures
  • Provide coverage in classrooms as needed for teacher breaks or absences

Personnel

  • Assist in recruiting, hiring, scheduling, orienting, training, and supervising Assistant Teachers, and Volunteers
  • Ensure that observations of and conferences with Assistant Teachers are completed
  • Create and facilitate staff meetings for Assistant Teachers
  • Address Assistant Teacher staff issues as they arise, offer support and guidance as needed, and elevate to Administrative Team as necessary

Staff

  • Supervise and train Assistant Teachers in the classroom
  • Engage in weekly team meetings
  • Attend mandatory monthly staff meetings
  • Serve as a leader in the classroom to ensure a positive, collaborative, and professional atmosphere
  • Assist with orientation of new staff members and Assistant Teachers
  • Demonstrate knowledge around program policies and procedures

Children

  • Plan and maintain developmentally appropriate classroom space, materials, and equipment
  • Implement and oversee developmentally appropriate classroom curriculum and activities in the classroom
  • Create a classroom environment that supports children in learning about and being exposed to diversity through age-appropriate materials and activities
  • Help children adjust successfully to the classroom setting
  • Promote positive discipline practices that support problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • Maintain children’s attendance, ongoing developmental growth, and portfolio of progress through documentation
  • Complete formal observations and assessments of children in classroom

Family Relations

  • Create welcoming environment for families
  • Develop and maintain positive and effective communication with families on a daily basis
  • Prepare for and conduct family conferences
  • Attend family meetings on topics related to early education and care and Center policies, among other things

Professional Growth

  • Continue to take course work as needed to meet performance goals and maintain EEC certification
  • Keep abreast of developing practices in the early childhood field
  • Attend onsite and offsite trainings

Required Skills

  • Lead Teacher certified (Infant/Toddler and/or Preschool) certified by MA Department of Early Care and Education (EEC)
  • Director I and II Certified, preferred
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a Lead Teacher or similar role in an early childhood setting
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and supervisory experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively and communicate well with others
  • Certificate of CPR and First Aid Training
  • Ability to build strong parent partnerships
  • Understanding of emergent and child centered curriculum
  • Experience working with children with a variety of learning needs and styles
  • Highly engaged in personal professional development and up-to-date on the latest early childhood education research
  • Ability to create and facilitate professional development trainings for staff members
