About Harbor City School

Founded in 2010 and located in the Eagle Hill neighborhood of East Boston, Harbor City

School (HCS) is a year-round, independent, non-profit preschool serving children aged 2

years 9 months to 5 years. HCS follows a Reggio Emilia approach to the curriculum

along with active family participation in the classroom.

Harbor City School believes in providing a nurturing, safe, creative, and educationally

appropriate environment for all our “Tugboats”. Using an emergent curriculum and

following the Reggio Emilia model of education, HCS encourages academic and social

growth through exploration, cooperative problem solving, and critical thinking. Children

develop social and educational relationships with supportive adults. Teachers use the MA

state frameworks as a guide.

About the Position

Reporting to The Board of Directors, this full-time position consists of being an active

teacher in the classroom and being responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the

school in accordance with EEC licensure requirements. In collaboration with the teaching

team, this position will curate and develop the curriculum in alignment with the HCS

mission, established protocols, and guidelines to ensure the school meets all standards. In

the 2020-2021 school year, the Director will lead the re-licensure process.

It is essential that the Center Director maintain strong, positive, relationships with

families, staff, Board of Directors, and vendors.

Additional responsibilities:

Operations :

● Manages school finances; submits annual budget for Board approval

● Responsible for accounts payable and receivable; submits monthly finance reports

to the Board of Directors

Compliance :

● Maintains high-level, up to date proficiency in applicable Massachusetts

Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) licensing requirements

● Ensures school’s compliance with all licensing and safety regulations as issued by

the EEC

● Ensures that staff and children’s files up to date and accurate

Program Development and Planning :

● Works with the Board of Directors to establish short and long term program and

organizational development goals

● Continues education for self and staff through training programs, conferences and

other professional development

● Maintains and creates fundraising opportunities in coordination with the Board of

Directors and the community

Curriculum and Classroom Management:

● Maintains safe classroom environment compliant with current EEC safety

requirements; ensures materials are in safe working condition and replaces as

necessary

● Analyzes assessment data; collaborates with teaching team to implement results

of assessment

● Advanced physical and intellectual competence of students by adapting program

activities to meet the individual needs of the children

Enrollment:

● Manages student admissions and retention in accordance with HCS enrollment

procedures and guidelines

● Maintains waitlist through clear means of communication

Hiring and Supervising Staff:

● Ensures that HCS is appropriately and professionally staffed at all times

● Maintains professional relationships and communication with staff members

● Responsible for all aspects of personnel management including hiring,

scheduling, supervision, developmental feedback, and termination , in accordance

with HCS personnel policies and procedures

● Communicates expectations to teaching team clearly, allowing for autonomy

within the classroom

Relationships and Collaboration:

● Parents Relations

○ Provides regular updates of individual children’s development including

managing any behavioral issues and relaying information regarding

injuries and other incidents

○ Addresses concerns and questions timely

○ Conveys policy changes and decisions voted upon by the board

● Board Relations

○ Collaborates with Board of Directors to ensure success and longevity of

HCS through establishing and providing regular updates to areas of

accountability Aligns with the Board President on annual and monthly

goals

○ Attends monthly board meetings as a non voting member of the Board

● Community Relations

○ Represents HCS at community events and forums with the goal of

promoting awareness of the school and it’s educational offerings

○ Utilizes multiple communication channels to represent HCS operations to

public including maintaining an up-to-date website, email, social media,

and other creative means

● Harbor City School values resourcefulness and this position is expected to take on

other duties as needed to ensure success.

Required Qualifications :

● The ideal candidate will hold a BA in Early Childhood Education or a related

field, be MA DEEC Director Level 1(minimum) Certified, and have a minimum

of three (3) years of successful classroom management/instruction and staff

management.

● Additionally:

○ Strong oral and written communication skills

○ First Aid and CPR certified

○ Desired Qualifications:

○ Proficient/Conversational Spanish

○ Experience with special education

○ Experience with EEC licensure Quickbooks or similar accounting

software

● Harbor City School offers a competitive compensation package including

Director role is a salaried position.
